We have been working with this family for nearly twenty years, progressively adding to their gorgeous Gimson house nestled in the heart of Charnwood Forest, Leicestershire. The brief for the kitchen was to create a space worthy of both the house and the view – a generous entertaining kitchen that honoured the extraordinary original oak structure of the building while feeling contemporary enough to live in comfortably today. No compromises on either side of that equation.
The Gimson House is a remarkable and distinctive building, and its character is inseparable from its exposed structural oak. Any kitchen design had to work with that – not against it, and not by mimicking it. The challenge was finding the right language to bridge two entirely different eras: the warmth and rawness of century-old timber on one hand, and the precision and comfort of a modern kitchen on the other. The wrong material choices would have looked either jarring or twee.
The design deliberately contrasted the building’s rustic oak structure with carefully chosen contemporary materials. Plush Silestone worktops were set against the original timbers. Eglomise mirror details – a traditional technique with a refined, modern feel – were introduced at key points. Velvet upholstery on the seating brought texture and warmth without competing with the wood.
The bridge between the two eras is our own handmade cabinetry: solid, timeless, designed to sit comfortably in any century. Our cabinets don’t shout – they support. And in a house this characterful, that restraint is everything. The result is a great entertaining space with views through Charnwood Forest to match.
A kitchen that feels as though it has always been there – because, in spirit, it has. The contrast of old and new reads exactly as intended: not a clash but a conversation between two eras, each respecting the other. The clients have continued to invite us back to work on other areas of the house, which is perhaps the truest measure of a project well done. Twenty years and counting.
